Readings

We’ve begun discussions of books about Socialism in the United States. Once you start reading about the ideas of people like Thomas Paine, Walt Whitman, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, and Martin Luther King, Jr., you start to see that Socialism isn’t some foreign idea that we want to impose on our fellow Utahns or Americans; rather, it is a homegrown ideal of unity, equality, and justice that’s part of the very fabric of our country and our state. Don’t believe us? Read some of these great books:

  • Eagleton, Terry. 2012. Why Marx Was Right. Yale University Press.
  • Harrington, Michael. 2011. Socialism: Past and Future. Arcade Publishing.
  • McCormick, John S., and John R Sillito. 2011. History of Utah Radicalism: Startling, Socialistic, and Decidedly Revolutionary. Utah State University Press.
  • Nichols, John. 2011. The “S” Word : a Short History of an American Tradition– Socialism. New York: Verso.
